THE OLD WOMAN WHO LIVED IN A SHOEChapter One
Everybody knows that once upon a time there was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and that she had so many children she didn't know what to do. And they know that she gave the children some broth without any bread, and whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed.
And that's all that most people know, because it's all that the song tells about them.
But a little bird came one morning and told me a great deal more. He told me how they came to live in the shoe, and how the children turned the Old Woman's hair gray with all the tricks they were up to - in fact, he told me about everything.
The first thing you need to know is that there were twenty - three children. The eldest was called
Anne and the second Benjy and the third Charlotte and the fourth Dan and the fifth Eliza and so on through all the letters of the alphabet, (except Q and X and Y, becaus the Old Woman could think of no names that began with those letters).
The name of the youngest was Zedekiah, but he was always called Zed for short. And there was just one sad thing about Zed, and that was that he was lame,
and could not run fast, because one leg was shorter than the other.
Before they lived in the shoe, the Old Woman and the Old Woman's husband and the twenty three children all lived together in a little house near a wood.
It was a cosy little house with a big garden. There were a few flowers near the house, but most of the garden was filled with vegetables which they used to take to market to sell, and they grew the best vegetables in all the countryside.
Today you have the first chapter in the Story of the Old Woman who lived in a Shoe.
